Again, I've only been to a few parks, so I don't have much to chose from, but what are your favorite dark rides?
With my limited selection, I'll go with...
GARFIELD'S NIGHTMARE at Kennywood! I like it because it has product placement as soon as you enter the ride, and its props are flourescent - just like Bill Tracy would have wanted them!
Just kidding...my real favorite is Trimper's Haunted House.

For classic dark rides, my favorites are Trimpers Haunted House and Disney's Haunted Mansion
For modern dark rides, I like Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin at WDW

The only dark rides (actual ride-not walkthroughs) I've ridden are the Whacky Shack at Waldameer Park, The Haunted House at Knoebels, and the Devil's Den at Conneaut Lake Park. Knoebels' Haunted House has their props very well-lit and everything worked. I loved it. But, since I have known and loved the Whacky Shack longer than that ride, I would have to say the Whacky Shack is my favorite.

Disney's Haunted Mansion is Modern; I can't call it a brand new, but it's not in the league of the ones I'd consider classic...
While in all honesty, I have every little ounce of Amusement Park Geek in me today thanks to Trimper's Haunted House; I have to call a tie on two; I love Trimper's Haunted House for the Design, the Colors, and the Art that went into it; but the scares and the gags could be better timed and better hid; I like Knoebel's Haunted Mansion for the darkness and the pure in-your-face gags that are all 100% Non Modern. It's all in House or Classic stuff; The Haunted House could be this way, but the onslaught of Distortions and Scarefactory Gags makes a mixed ride...

Yeah, lots of stuff in Knoebel's is right in your face, and nothing really is that way in The Haunted House... Knoebel's is just a more exciting ride...

All rides are different. Knoebels has the exciting feel. Wacky Shack is crazy. The HH is just awesome. All the classics are equal in my mind. But the best modern dark ride is the exterminator at kennywood. it's one of the only rides they did right. it gives so much of a feeling you are in the sewers. It's just an awesome ride.

Hey, I have to agree! Never thought about that one. It REALLY is underrated...no one seems to bring it up anywhere. It's one wild ride! It truly deserves Kennywood's advertising...unlike Ghostwood!

The H.H.'s feeling is so distinct...creaking floors and slow-moving coffins - you can't get that many places.

Hey Guys!....I rode Trimper's HH in the 70's when I was 4 years old!....Then many times in the 90's....2004 was the last time I've been to OC....That was the only dark ride I experienced until last year, we went to knoebel's....We went back in June again this year...I really don't know which one I like better....Probably Trimper's because even though they have newer/replacement stunts, They still have the facade, coffin cars, and the remaining stunts on different floor levels....I like the slower car pace at Trimper's too...It's easier to "take it all in" so to speak....I didn't realize rehoboth had their own HH ride or I definitely would make my way to experience it next time I'm there...What is so bad about Ghostwood Manor?....I'm guessing the fact that you have to shoot stuff to make it move versus just riding and let the experience surprise you.....I've never been to Kennywood but want to go soon....I regret that I never got to experience "Gold Nugget"....or "Gold Rush" maybe?...Whatever the ride was Ghostwood replaced.....It looked really cool.....I didn't know about exterminator so I'll definitely have to chech that one out as well....I believe my favorite would be Disney's HM if I ever got to experience it.....I've day dreamed for a long time how cool something that extreme would look/feel.....I'm pretty sure that would be my top pick.....ZR

Hey! The Gold Rusher was built in 1981, and it was pretty cool! www.youtube.com/watch?v=trNcikZMH0kSure, it was old and not many exciting things happened in the ride, but it was definitely scary for younger riders! Lady Getting Attacked By Spider, Dropping Spider, Oncoming (Moving) Train, Low-Flying Bats, and a couple other effects were pretty much it. Ghostwood Estate is very different; I kind-of like it as well as not like it... and the Exterminator is just awesome! ;D I've never been to Rehoboth Beach to check out their Haunted Mansion...

It's obvious I'm a fan of Disney's Haunted Mansion; I run my own website devoted to it; but when I sit back and look at what the Orlando park has done to the amusement industry, I have to wonder; what would Walt Disney think? Sure, he was all for new technology; but he was a man of nostalgia; his Main Street USA in the Disneyland Original feels like something of the past; the arcade reminds me of Kennywood's in some respects; What would he think of the fact that his company drove millions of nostalgic parks to close their doors? Hence, my love hate relationship...
The Gold Rusher...ah, I am lucky enough to have experienced it; and I enjoyed it.

Nostalgia....That's the perfect word to use of what I felt when I visited Knoebel's....The same enjoyment I felt when going to park's in the 80's......Before the park's either closed down or got taken over by big corporations and made into something totally different and much more expensive.....I really hope Knoebel's is able to stay privately owned in my lifetime at least so I've got somewhere to go to remember what amusement parks are suppose to be like.....ZR

I loved the Gold Rusher! My favorite part was the Coyotes boiling the person. It had the feel of a classic dark ride that you won't find on Ghostwood Estate

They would all turn their heads as you went by!
that is called the "hollow face illusion" that happened to be discovered by disney
Here is a sample video URL: www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHuStlT1RM8
I've tried doing this before, but i need a better mask

It wasn't that effect. That effect is in the Haunted Mansion. The coyotes were animatronics.

That's a wierd illusion. I've never seen that before. But, yeah, the coyote heads would just follow your car as you went by, and their recovery would be just turning back the other way.
tomshutter, Old Mill as in Kennywood Old Mill?? If so, I'd love to see them!

I have to say the Gold Nugget. It may be gone now but it sure was cool.
A close second favorite would be the 7 Dwarves ride at disneyland. My wife thought it was scarier than the Haunted Mansion, with the witch popping out everywhere.
