How long has it been since the one in bat hill has been in flight? I can't even recall how many years it's been out of commission. Maybe it's not many in reality but it seems like an eternity for some reason!

The Bat at Bat Hill is in and out of commission on an annual basis. Last winter, they totally removed the bat and re-fiber glassed the tail and head to make it one solid piece, but even so, because the Bat is in such close proximity to the riders, it is an easy target for vandalism. I would bet that out of the key 100 days of summer that the HH is open, the Bat is working 20 or 30 of those days---Maybe!
The Bat is actually mounted on nothing more than a pneumatic powered garage door opener, which is fragile in the hands of careless riders. More often than not, the mechanism is what breaks, which will cause the bat to sit motionless.
It does not surprise me that it seems like an eternity since it has been working. Unfortunately, it is just an easy target…

Ah. It always did seem pretty low, and even more so since that room has a hill. I have to admit that I have touched the tail before, not in an act of vandalism of course, but rather to get an idea of the material. Hopefully we'll all be able to see it in flight at least once this season, or better yet capture it on film.
