Hypothetically, if an unknown patron approached Granville with a $10,000 grant towards Haunted House upgrades, how do YOU think the money would best be spent?
• Refurbishing current effects? • Purchase new effects? (IE Distortions, Scarefactory, etc) • Upgrade sound effects with new recordings and digital sound system(s)? • Lighting package with sophisticating lighting programs?
A lot of folks have commented that a new deck of pre-recorded sounds would make ALL the difference in the world. But, I tend to think that a mixture of sounds/lighting would be effective. There is nothing more terrifying than uncertainty in a dark ride, and a blend of lighting and sounds effects working hand-in-hand, in my opinion, would be extraordinary.
What do you think?

I think that upgrading the sound and also restoring some of the original Tracy stunts. Most of us here probably agree that OC is losing most of its past, preserving some of the original effects in the HH goes along way to preserving the past that we enjoy. I know some of them are cheesy, but this stuff is priceless in the extent, that we'll never see this stuff made again.

Refurbishing the current and original stunts would be the best way to go. Keeping the HH as close to it's original form as possible is the best policy in this case, as I'm sure everyone here would agree. Some new sound repeaters (with the old sounds of course) would be a nice addition as well. And other odds and ends, such as a new paint job (forced perspective rooms, to liven the effect), fixing up some of the moving stunts, and maybe touching up some areas of the exterior. A bit of eerie lighting in some areas might be useful, too.

aside from keeping what they have and maintaining it, which brings with it a legacy and unique quality that will continue to set it apart from the others, the three big things i'd like to see them concentrate on all require very little money:
1. sounds. everything needs sound. it gives each stunt a "voice." it should be a mix of the loud, quick surprises and the use of foreboding background noise to keep the riders on edge.
2. lighting. well-timed, brief pinspots can pull attention to a minor stunt. it helps create the element of surprise, whether it be a moving stunt or not. just a second or two.
3. darkness. i know they won't agree with me here, but there should be more moments of complete darkness to help make #2 more effective. currently, i think the ONLY moment of true darkness is when the car leaves the broken beam hill and first enters the falling barrels area. (oh, when did the barrels move? they haven't moved in years, in my recollection).
there you go! excitement factor increased 50% with the simplest and cheapest of work.

I'm gonna have to agree with Gary, the simple surprises are most effective when done right. I haven't seen the barrels move in, geeze, 15 years? Then it got to where the light would go out but they wouldn't move at all beforehand. And then I remember when the light wouldn't cut off at all. Go figure, haha. Getting this stunt back to it's original state would be a nice upgrade as well.
